Giant squid, something that we're particularly interested in here at Squid Ink, are right now invading the waters off Newport Beach. Fishermen first started reeling in the catch last Thursday, some of which have measured up to 4 feet long and weighed in at 60 pounds. According to the L.A. Times, Robert Woodbury, manager at Newport Landing Sportfishing, reports 400 squid caught since Friday night. How long the squid will stick around is anyone's guess, since they come and go according to the food source (anchovies) instead of a particular season. To accommodate those wanting to catch the squid, Newport Landing is running squid trips, one of which is scheduled for tonight, from 6 – 10 p.m. What to do with your squid once you haul them back to your kitchen? Try chef Craig Strong's recipe for bread-stuffed calamari. You may need to have a block party.
