When the FBI gives you a nickname for robbing banks, it's usually only a matter of time before agents catch up with you.

The bureau today said that is the case for 44-year-old Alim Shamil Urmancheev of Studio City, who was charged by the L.A. County District Attorney's office in connection with seven Westside bank robberies.

The suspect was known as the …

… “Westside Gun & Bag Bandit” not just because of the locations, but because he “threatened a weapon and typically carried a brown paper bag in which the stolen cash was placed,” the FBI claimed in a statement released today.

The FBI says Urmancheev robbed seven banks from September through January, including:

9/25/13 Union Bank 429 Santa Monica Boulevard Santa Monica
10/22/13 U.S. Bank 4700 Lincoln Boulevard Los Angeles
11/4/13 U.S. Bank 3302 West Pico Boulevard Santa Monica
11/30/13 Chase 1415 Lincoln Boulevard Venice
12/11/13 Chase 310 North Fairfax Avenue Los Angeles
1/7/14 U.S. Bank 1401 Wilshire Boulevard Santa Monica
1/25/14 Chase Bank 11700 National Boulevard West Los Angeles

Sometimes the suspect wore a baseball cap, sometimes a cowboy hat, agents said. Authorities caught up with Urmancheev in Venice on Jan. 27 following the Jan. 25 robbery of a Chase bank in Mar Vista, they said.

The LAPD and Santa Monica police helped with the investigation, the FBI stated.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller told us agents are trying to determine if Urmancheev is a United States citizen. If he's not, she said, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials would be brought in on the case. Either way, Eimiller said, prosecution on the robbery case would go forward.

According to L.A. County Sheriff's Department inmate data, the suspect was arrested by LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division detectives.

He was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in LAX court Feb. 26.
