Alice Longyu Gao — High Dragon of the Universe: Born in China, now splitting her time between New York and L.A., DJ and producer Alice Longyu Gao started DJing in December 2016.

“My second gig was for A$AP Mob’s VLONE launch during Art Basel Miami,” she says. “It was always serious.”

The aim of her sound, Gao says, is to make the listeners move and feel “some type of way.”

“To achieve that goal, whatever it takes,” she says. “Mainly computer.”

The current electronic music scene, Gao says, is designed by heterosexual white men to guarantee their success.

“All LGBTQ+ nightlife and entertainment workers, including myself, lost income [during the pandemic],” she says. “On top of that, I am not even American so it was extra hard to get through financially and mentally.”

Her new single and video is “100 Boyfriends.” That was preceded by “KANPAI,” a gloriously manic club anthem and a love letter to Asian culture.

“This song was written three years ago and it was when Asian pop entertainment hadn’t sweep the western music industry,” she says. “I’m not saying now that Asian pop acts are all being taken seriously. But in this song I am fantasizing about the day I become the biggest artist in the world.”

Looking  ahead, Gao is going on tour with Rebecca Black in January, and her debut EP is coming out in October.

“I hope LACMA can be completely free for everyone to visit and provide shuttle bus service in 2022,” she adds.

Alice Longyu Gao — High Dragon of the Universe: The “KANPAI” single is out now. The High Dragon and Universe EP is out October 14.
