Whit Stillman hasn't released a film in 13 years, which is why fans of the writer-director's wry depictions of America's “urban haute bourgeoisie” are abuzz over the fact that he's currently working on a new feature entitled Damsels In Distress. If you are one of the giddy Stillman-ites who were previously convinced you'd never get another dose of Whit, now's your chance to grill him on the new film as well as his feature debut, Metropolitan when it screens at Cinefamily this week. The 1990 comedy about young, upper-class New Yorkers and the left-leaning, politely disapproving outsider who wanders into their midst feels moderately dated in style, but not in smarts. Over time, Stillman's cinematic voice feels more and more like a fly-on-the-wall perspective on Woody Allen trapped in an elevator with Oscar Wilde. And that's not a bad thing.
