Sometimes all it takes is a little soul food. This Sunday, Now-Again Records is throwing a party commemorating the release of their new anthology of Zambian rock from the '70s. As a side dish to Southern Africa psychedelia, the esteemed label has teamed up with Palate Food + Wine to serve up some savory Zambian soul food while label head Egon and guest DJs spin Zamrock's finest. The new double disc compilation, Dark Sunrise , features Rikki Ililonga and his band Musi-O-Tunya, who pioneered psychedelic rock after Zambia's independence from Britain in the '70s. With scorching guitar solos, funky horn sections, and harmonized call and response vocals, Ililonga and his band created a dark rock sound that could have been spawned in a Detroit garage. Soul food and soulful space-outs? Not much better than that.
