Inside downtown gallery Lethal Amounts on Sunday, members of Aesthetic Meat Front tested the boundaries of what the human body can endure. Suspended from the ceiling and connected by subcutaneous hooks to a variety of mechanisms, the performers were transformed by body-modification artist Louis Fleischauer into a musical installation — called Symphony of Flesh — to celebrate AMF's 20th anniversary. 

Attendees looked on as the performers, in various states of undress, their bodies painted, achieved a trancelike state as they sustained multiple piercings, all in the name of art. As the group's site explains, “In the spirit of early surrealist ideals, the goal of these rituals is to invoke a reality-shift within the minds of audience members.”
