Los Angeles has cemented its reputation as a hub for forward-facing dance music. Right in the mix of things is DJ AC Slater, whose monthly Night Bass event at Sound in Hollywood has piqued the attentions of tastemakers around the nation.

The party has only happened twice, but BPM magazine has already named it “the most exciting new U.S dance event.”

Slater merges the groove-laden staccato rhythms of UK garage with sub-low bass rumblings. “Night Bass is my description for a mixture of house, garage, bassline and grime with a dash of old skool rave,” he says. “Just fun bass music you can dance to.”

“People are ready for something different and exciting,” he goes on. “The big crazy festival sound is good, but sometimes you need something a little more toned down. That's where Night Bass comes in – still heavy, bassy and energetic, but not as blatant.”

The event has taken off quickly in part because it's emerging in lockstep with developments across the pond. Last month's headliner Taiki & Nulight brought the UK Bassline House vibes and tonight, Shift K3y will unleash his whomp-tastic, crossover-ready riddims. (Petey Clicks and AC Slater himself will also be performing.)

Sound nightclub has been a great addition to L.A. – it's the Weekly's pick for best after-hours spot. The vibe is relaxed, the system is tremendous, and their programming suggests more Hoxton and less Hollywood.

“There is no other party in LA where you will hear music like this,” says Slater. “We're bringing a warehouse vibe into a nice club with a great soundsystem.”
