It's hard to believe it's only been two years since Abe Vigoda's Skeleton, and the Smell's burgeoning fame, put the L.A. band on the map.

It seems like a lot has happened since. Mika Miko split, a new venue was dubbed press darling, and No Age has set a date for their new one, Everything In Between.

In February, Abe V leaked the track, “Crush,” which contrary to what the band had been saying, wasn't particularly longer, slower or dancier.

But the just-out press release announcing the quartet's new album, Crush (out September 21 on PPM, Sept. 20 on Bella Union abroad), promises “glassy shards of 'cold wave' pop, with synthesisers, sequencers and altogether broodier beats.”

Newest song, “Throwing Shade” delivers all of that.

Apparently the new drummer, along with the band's taste for the gothic arts, is responsible for the shift. From the release:

In 2009 Dane Chadwick replaced drummer Reggie Guerrero, introducing a new style of regimented beats as well as other musical ideas to the table. “More than just rhythmically, Dane helped with melodies and most of the electronics on the album,” says vocalist Michael Vidal.

Meanwhile, guitarist Juan Velasquez had already posted the fact he dug UK dreampop and goth. To which Vidal adds, “My favorite kind of music is instantly nostalgic and emotionally confusing. And reverb has always been a big part of our sound. We were definitely inspired by cold wave and minimal wave stuff, as well as Arthur Russell.”
