In honor of Anthony Breznican's new book, Brutal Youth, about the struggles that accompany growing up, the Aero is showing three coming-of-age double features this weekend. First up, at 7:30 p.m., is Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures, in which Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey made their screen debuts as obsessive teens involved in a notorious 1954 murder in New Zealand. Also on Friday night is Rob Reiner's Stand by Me, based on a Stephen King novella, which follows four junior high boys as they search for the missing body of a presumed dead kid. Lynskey will be at the event in person, and Breznican will have a book signing.

Saturday, June 21

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mean Girls, Street Food Cinema hosts an outdoor screening of the highly quotable film (“Stop trying to make fetch happen!”) at Brookside Park. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with food trucks. Daniel Franzese (Damian) will make an appearance and possibly perform with his band. Wear pink, even though it's not Wednesday.

As part of LACMA's ongoing series highlighting festival standouts, get a first look at Joe Berlinger's Whitey: United States v. James J. Bulger at the Bing Theater at 7:30 p.m. Boston mob boss Bulger was No. 2 on America's Most Wanted list (after Osama bin Laden), murdering more than a dozen people and eluding capture until he was caught by police in Santa Monica in 2011. This doc follows Bulger's 2013 trial and questions the integrity of members of the legal system and law enforcement involved with the case. Berlinger will be at the screening as well.

While the excitement for the new J.J. Abrams – helmed Star Wars is still brewing, why not take a slightly deviated walk down memory lane with Mel Brooks' Spaceballs? The Crest Theater will hold a screening of this classic sci-fi parody, about the quest to stop Lord Dark Helmet from stealing Planet Druidia's air supply. The preshow kicks off at 7:30 p.m., followed by the film at 8 p.m. and the tribute jam at 10 p.m.
