Saturday, April 20

The Getty Center launches its two-weekend In Tokyo series at the Harold M. Williams Auditorium Saturday at 4 p.m. with Mr. Thank You, which follows a bus ride from the rural countryside to Tokyo. It's from director Hiroshi Shimizu, known as Japan's Jean Renoir. The title comes from the driver's nickname, referring to what he says to pedestrians who step out of the way of his bus. Admission is free with a required reservation (up to 4 per person) at getty.edu.

Tuesday, April 23

Schwing! Wayne's World is turning 21, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences celebrates with a reunion at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at 7:30 p.m. At the event, hosted by producer Lorne Michaels, stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey and director Penelope Spheeris will discuss the making of the film. Tickets are sold out, but there will be a standby line starting at 5:30 p.m.

Wednesday, April 24

You have two chances to see John Carpenter's sci-fi horror The Thing on Wednesday: at the Los Feliz 3 at 9:30 p.m. or as part of the AFI Night at the Movies, at the ArcLight Hollywood, at 7 p.m. An adaptation of John W. Campbell Jr.'s novella Who Goes There? as well as a remake of Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World, it follows an American research station in Antarctica that's terrorized by a shape-shifting alien. Star Kurt Russell will present the AFI Night screening.

Other stars presenting their films at this event include Sally Field with Norma Rae, Harrison Ford with Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Demi Moore with Ghost, Mike Myers with Shrek, Sidney Poitier with In the Heat of the Night, Kevin Spacey with The Usual Suspects andSamuel L. Jackson with Pulp Fiction. Tickets to each screening are $30 and include a large popcorn, soda and Magnum ice cream bar.

Thursday, April 25

The TCM Classic Film Festival takes over the TCL Chinese Theatre, Egyptian Theatre and Chinese 6 Theatres through April 28. Those willing to spend big for a Classic Festival Pass ($549) or higher can enjoy Club TCM, which hosts an opening-night discussion of South Pacific at the Poolside Roosevelt Hotel at 7:30 p.m. with leading lady Mitzi Gaynor (Nellie Forbush) and France Nuyen (Liat, the beautiful Tonkinese woman with whom Lt. Joseph Cable falls in love). Through its dual mixed-race romances, this musical explored the topic of racial prejudice.

Meanwhile, the more frugal can go to select individual screenings for $20 for most shows.
