A Day at Hearst Castle

Our L.A. apartments certainly aren't palaces, so let's take a trip to newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst's castle in San Simeon. This luxurious Mediterranean revival architectural gem was designed and built by Julia Morgan for Hearst beginning in 1919 and continuing for the next 28 years. Gone are the days of elaborate parties attended by L.A.'s most prestigious residents, including Hearst's mistress, actress Marion Davies, but as you walk through some of the 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, gardens, indoor/outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, and private movie theater, it's hard not to feel like high society, if only for the day.
