Speaking of chocolate cake … While searching for the best individual slice of chocolate layer cake in Los Angeles  we were tipped off to something we think might be even better: the chocolate fudge Bundt cake at Doan's Bakery in Woodland Hills.

The family-owned shop, started by Karen Doan and her son Eric, has been open since 1984. It operates, for the most part, as a wholesale bakery, making more than 100 cakes a week for restaurants, caterers and assorted private clients. As a small retail shop, they sell a gorgeous selection of scones, croissants, muffins, cakes and dainty mini bundt cakes.

Peering into the case, it's the chocolate fudge Bundt cake that makes your eyes go big. The flawless circle of chocolate cake, dotted with chunks of Swedish chocolate, is topped with the requisite cascade of glossy chocolate ganache.

The cake is luxuriously tender. As for being moist, well, if some cakes are the Moab, this cake is the Amazon.  And at less than 10 bites, it's a lovely treat. If you want more than that, you can order a whole cake to take home and share – or not, if your waistline doesn't mind.

The cake is so good, you don't even need a glass of milk to wash it down.  But if you do want a beverage Doan's offers a full espresso bar.  Pull up a chair. Marvel at that perfect bite of cake.
