The award-winning documentary KŪKAI will screen at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills on July 30 during a special evening for invited guests. The event will include a reception, the 90-minute film presentation, and a post-screening Q&A with director Yue Ye and members of the filmmaking team.
Directed by Beijing filmmaker Yue Ye, KŪKAI tells the story of the Japanese Buddhist monk whose journey to Tang China in 804 AD became one of the defining cultural exchanges in East Asian history. Traveling to study under the Buddhist master Huiguo, Kūkai returned to Japan with teachings that would shape the development of Shingon Buddhism while also influencing Japanese art, literature, calligraphy, architecture, and education for centuries.
Rather than presenting a conventional historical biography, the documentary blends historical research, location filming, cinematic recreations, and contemporary visual techniques to explore the monk’s life through themes of learning, compassion, perseverance, and the exchange of ideas across cultures. The film also highlights the Tang Dynasty as a period of remarkable intellectual and artistic openness, when scholars, monks, and diplomats helped carry knowledge and traditions across national boundaries.

Presented in Mandarin with English subtitles, KŪKAI offers audiences an accessible look at a historical figure whose influence continues to extend across East Asia more than 1,200 years after his journey. The independently produced documentary marks Yue Ye’s feature directorial debut after a career in journalism and television production in China. The project combines documentary filmmaking with dramatic reconstruction and computer-generated imagery to recreate the world of ninth-century Asia.
The film is part of a broader artistic project inspired by Kūkai’s life. Composer Zou Ye created a symphonic work based on the monk’s journey that has been performed internationally, including by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, while the documentary’s trailer features music by acclaimed Japanese composer Kenji Kawai.
KŪKAI has earned recognition on the international festival circuit, receiving official selections at 24 film festivals, appearing in 30 competition and showcase programs, and winning eight awards. It has also been screened in cities across the United States, Europe, Asia, and Oceania, bringing Kūkai’s story to audiences around the world.
For Los Angeles audiences, the Beverly Hills screening offers a chance to experience a documentary that examines not only the life of an influential Buddhist monk, but also the enduring impact of cultural exchange and shared knowledge.
