In what is turning out to be a banner week for bad food, nine tons of hummus and other dips sold at Trader Joe's and Target are being recalled for possible listeria contamination. (This follows on the heels of Wolverine Packing Co.'s recall of 1.8 million pounds of ground beef and Kraft Foods' pulling 1.2 million cases of cottage cheese.)

The Texas Department of Health discovered the contamination during a routine test of Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus. Lansal Inc. is recalling all products manufactured at the same facility.

The recalled varieties include the aforementioned Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus, Target Archer Farms Roasted Garlic with Roasted Garlic Tapenade, Target Archer Farms Roasted Red Pepper with Roasted Red Pepper Topping and Trader Joe's Edamame Hummus as well as the Mediterranean Veggie Hummus Wrap and the Hummus Veggie Snacker (both sold at Target). The affected products are Trader Joe's, Archer Farms and Giant Eagle brands.

Trader Joe's 5 Layered Dip (our favorite “bad' dinner) also is being recalled in several states but not California – yet. Out of an abundance of caution, you might want to avoid that one, too. The products have use-by dates ranging from April 28 to June 11. For the complete list of recalled items, click here.

Retailers and distributors have been told to remove all products affected by the contamination.

Although no illnesses have been reported, Listeria monocytogenes may cause fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal issues. It is especially serious for young children, frail or elderly people, and pregnant women.

Consumers may return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those with any questions may call toll-free (877) 550-0694.

For those keeping track, Trader Joe's seems to have more than its reasonable share of food recalls. There were the salads and wraps in November. And those three tons of BBQ chicken salad last July. And the butter chicken in December 2012. And, of course, that massive peanut butter recall in fall 2012. We could go on.

There are so many things we love about you, but we're really getting sick – literally – of you buying from dirty food suppliers, TJ's.
