Michael Rigg Dies in Freak Sledding Accident in Idyllwild-Pine Cove

RIVERSIDE, CA (March 23, 2021) – Sunday afternoon, 7-year-old Michael Rigg was killed in a deadly sledding crash on Sylvan Way.

The accident happened just before 2:50 p.m., on the 5200 block of Sylvan Way. According to police, the boy was sledding down a driveway with his family, when suddenly the boy slid onto the road.

A 2020 Ford Transit 350 van was driving at a low rate of speed just as the boy approached the road and slipped under the vehicle. As a result, the young child suffered serious injuries.

The driver, a 35-year-old man from Desert Hot Springs, came to a complete stop and offered assistance. The driver did not appear to be drunk or otherwise careless.

The boy was taken to the Riverside County firehouse in Idyllwild, where firefighters tried to save his life and arranged for him to be airlifted to a hospital by helicopter. The boy, however, was declared dead a short time later.
