A vehicle has hit pedestrians at a Metro rail or bus stop near the 110 and 105 freeways this afternoon, authorities said.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said that 50 first-responders were headed to the scene.
The California Highway Patrol stated a carpool lane was closed and major injuries were reported. More to come.
[Added]: Reports of the accident started coming in shortly before 4 p.m.
A Metro spokeswoman told ABC7 that a motorist going north on the 110 freeway inadvertently entered the bus stop lane at the Metro Green Line station (11500 S. Figueroa St.) and, to avoid hitting a stopped bus there, ended up driving onto a platform where people were waiting for a bus, striking six.
The TV station said many if not all were critically injured.
The Metro stop appears to connect the Figueroa corridor above to the freeway, from which buses come for connections.
At about 4:09 p.m. Metro announced that the “freeway level” of the station was closed.
[Update at 4:31 p.m.]: L.A. Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott told us that 7 people were hit and sustained serious to critical injuries. They were all taken to hospitals.
The victims included six males and one female, he said.
Rescuers got the call at about 3:15, according to Scott.
Mark Littman of Metro told us the same story that was told to ABC7, namely that a “wrong-way driver” ended up in a lane used by a freeway level bus stop at the Metro Green Line station and, in order to avoid a stopped bus there, drove onto a platform and hit “6 or 7” people waiting for a bus.
He says it happened about 3:14 p.m.
