LAPD announced it was reopening the newly remodeled 6th Street Bridge after several days of closures due to safety concerns.

On Tuesday, LAPD tweeted, “The 6th Street Bridge will be closed until further notice due to illegal activity and public safety concerns,” before announcing that it was reopened Wednesday morning.

Since the grand opening of the bridge connecting the downtown L.A. Arts District to Boyle Heights, several viral incidents have occurred, ranging from comedic intention, to dangerous stunts.

The first notable incident occurred on July 18, where a car lost control after peeling out and hit the barrier separating the road from the pedestrian walkway.

The driver fled the scene, only to later turn himself in to LAPD.

After that incident, multiple videos began surfacing on social media, with Angelenos orchestrating stunts such as setting up a barber chair for a haircut in the centre median, skateboarding atop the archways, filming quinceañera  dances and even an orchestrated wedding proposal.

These incidents led to LAPD closing the bridge to thru traffic from Friday, July 22 to Tuesday, July 26, although pedestrians were still allowed in.

The bridge held its grand opening on July 10, with a ribbon cutting, night market-style celebration and a firework display illuminating the downtown sky.

A 12-acre park underneath the viaduct is slated to begin construction, with a 2024 opening time frame. The park will include an arts plaza and entertainment amphitheater with a stage and viewing area on the western most side of the viaduct. Additionally, multiple sports fields and courts, as well as picnic areas, a dog park and a playground.
