Every February, millions of people come together to celebrate Black History Month and honor the important contributions that African Americans have made to society. Many museums host special events in honor of Black History Month such as panel discussions, film screenings, and exhibitions. This is a great way to learn more about African American culture and history firsthand. Check your local museum for upcoming events and mark your calendar so you don’t miss out!

Watch A Documentary

Documentaries are a great way to gain insight into the past and present struggles of African Americans. There are dozens of documentaries available about topics such as civil rights, segregation, education reform, police brutality, and much more. Take some time this month to watch one or two documentaries alone or with friends.

Podcasts are another great way to learn more about African American history. There are several podcasts that discuss everything from racism in America, slavery in the United States, black activism in politics, and how black culture has impacted popular music today. You can search through various podcast apps or websites like iTunes or Spotify to find relevant podcasts for this month’s celebration.

Read Books By Authors Of Color

One of the best ways to learn more about African American history is by reading books written by authors of color. Such books include “The Autobiography Of Malcolm X” by Malcolm X and Alex Haley; “Dreams From My Father” by Barack Obama; “The Fire Next Time” by James Baldwin; “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou; “Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass” by Frederick Douglass; and many others. Reading these books will give you an inside look into what it was like living during different eras in American history for people of color.

Volunteer With An Organization That Supports Equality

There are several organizations that focus on promoting racial equality such as NAACP (National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People), ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), National Urban League (NUL), Anti-Defamation League (ADL) ,and many others that would welcome volunteers who want to help further their cause this month! Volunteering with any one of these organizations is a great way to show your support for racial equality while also learning more about black history during this month-long celebration!

Support Local Businesses Owned By People Of Color

During this month-long celebration, why not support local businesses owned by people of color? Whether it’s a restaurant, clothing store, barbershop/salon, bakery/cafe – supporting small businesses is an excellent way to help spread awareness about Black History Month while also helping out small business owners in your community! Check out Yelp or other review sites for suggestions on where you can go shop locally during this special month!

Black History Month provides us with an opportunity each year to come together as a community and recognize the amazing contributions that African Americans have made throughout our nation’s history.
