Leading up to this year's Best of L.A. issue (due out Oct. 4), we'll be counting down, in no particular order, 100 of our favorite dishes.

57: Brown Brown Bread Ice Cream at Scoops Westside.

Robert Redford once said “health food may be good for the conscience, but Oreos taste a hell of a lot better.” We couldn't agree more.

But what if there was a way to satisfying both your conscience and your sweet tooth, without resorting to, say, a sugar-free, watered-down cup of imitation frozen yogurt? At Scoops Westside in Palms, the Brown Brown Bread ice cream offers exactly that. Rich and creamy ice cream that's never cloying and undeniably comforting.

Although it's a favorite among customers, most aren't able to identify it's secret crunchy ingredient right away. It's Grape Nuts cereal, or more accurately, a double helping of Grape Nuts, since this version is an barley-amped improvement over the original Brown Bread. (Which is available at the original East Hollywood location and a new outpost in Highland Park.)

It's not rare to see parents trying to nudge there children towards the Triple-B, as the flavor is informally known: It's delicious after all, and can be construed in some delusionist fashion, to be a sort of health food. One that you won't feel guilty about taking a extra scoop.
