See amazing horses
Whether you love animals or just hate people, the 26th annual Tournament of Roses Equestfest will fill you with joy when you preview the equestrian units scheduled to march in the Rose Parade. You’ll see horses and riders dancing, jumping and roping for hours in the showgrounds, and when it’s all over, you can talk to the riders or just tell a horse a secret, because most of them don’t talk. Have you seen that video of the high-stepping cat that supposedly learned to walk that way from being raised around show horses? Go watch it beforehand! Quentin Tarantino’s three-month reign as full-time curator ends with what we’ll call New Bev’s Eve: The Poseidon Adventure (the original, with Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine and Shelley Winters) at 7:30 p.m. and More American Graffiti at 9:55 p.m. George Lucas was too busy with the Star Wars franchise to direct the sequel to his classic high school movie, but Ron Howard came back anyway. Cutting among four New Year’s Eves (1964, ’65, ’66 and ’67), the film serves as an update on what became of the soon-to-be college freshmen from the original. As far as New Year’s Eve events go, you can’t beat free. Grand Park’s annual party, New Year’s Eve L.A., is a family-friendly bash that’s sure to be packed. There’s no alcohol at the event, but the musical lineup, with Breakestra, Garth Trinidad, Chris Douridas and others, will keep you dancing even without the liquid courage. Thirty food trucks will provide the variety you and your party buddies crave. Discover L.A. is showcasing the best local Instagram pics (#LAStory) at the Hall of Administration Building and a photo booth will be on hand for NYE memories. To cap off the night, the countdown to 2015 will feature 3-D video mapping on City Hall. It’s all accessible by Metro and there is free valet service for bicyclists. Grand Park, 210 N. Do performance art
Artist Lowell Darling has long focused on conceptually guided direct actions as mediums of expression, akin to performance art but more inclusive, drawing attention to problems in society and existence. For example, the energy blockages created by psychic and environmental stresses, which Darling has previously attempted to treat with a series he calls “Worldwide Acupuncture.” Think of New Year’s Day, then, as “Worldwide Massage” — he calls it Hands-On Healing Day — as everyone everywhere is invited to pause, mid-hangover, at noon local time, kneel down, place their hands on the Earth and think good thoughts for her speedy recovery.
