TED Talks – lectures originating in a set of global conferences focused on technology, entertainment and design – have become enormously influential (and ubiquitous), but their origin story is still unknown by many fans. A special event at USC, “23 Feb 1984: The Beginning of Something Wonderful,” aims to set that straight, with a talk by TED creator Richard Saul Wurman, focusing on incredible moments in TED history. Hear stories direct from Wurman about the conference's establishment and its 30 successful years of talking. If you're not crazy about TED's occasionally all-too-simplistic lectures, Wurman is still an interesting subject: He also has worked as an FAIA architect, cartographer, professor, urban designer, information theorist and graphic designer. His healthy dose of curiosity has clearly fueled his success, so why not take a page out of his book (he's written 83) and allow yourself to explore something new. USC, Bovard Auditorium, 3551 Trousdale Pkwy., University Park; Monday, April 14, 7 p.m.; free. usc.edu/calendar/event/906962.
