She said the situation was still active; rescuers couldn't move in. They were staged a block away.

[Added at 2:53 p.m.]: Inglewood police Lt. Oscar Mejia told reporters at the scene that arriving officers shot it out with the suspect.

“There were multiple shots exchanged at the scene,” he said.

It's not clear if the suspect was hit.

One officer was definitely hit by gunfire the lieutenant said; it wasn't clear about the other. The cops were “doing fine and in stable condition,” Mejia said.

He couldn't confirm whether or not the suspect had hostages. He said a suspect had called the police station a few times but at this point wasn't speaking.

“We would like to ask him to please surrender peacefully,” Mejia said, adding,”We have evacuated residences in the area.”

The lieutenant said it all started with a “family disturbance” call.

[Added at 4:12 p.m.]: An official told KNX 1070 Newsradio that the officer hit by gunfire was struck in the chest but that the round did not penetrate his body armor.

That cop still suffered “significant injury” to his chest as a result of the impact, however, the official said.

[Update at 9:30 p.m.]: Multiple reports indicate that a suspect has surrendered tonight and that two hostages were freed and otherwise safe.

[Update at 4:59 p.m. Thursday]: The L.A. County Sheriff's Department identified the suspected shooter as 45 year-old Christopher Warsaw.

He was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and jailed in lieu of $1 million bail, sheriff's officials said in a statement today.

Deputies gave this synopsis of what allegedly happened:

The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 12:30 pm on Wednesday Inglewood Police Department personnel received a Family Disturbance call for service stating that a man was dragging a teenage girl into a house. When Inglewood Police Officers responded to the location and attempted to make contact with the residents, they were met with gunfire at the front door of the location. A male officer was shot in his chest area but survived the gunshot due to his ballistic vest. A female officer sustained a minor injury but was not struck by any gunfire.

Several Inglewood police officers were able to return gunfire during the confrontation.

The girl was the daughter of his girlfriend, authorities said. Both were allegedly held in the house during the standoff, sheriff's officials said.

The male officer who was shot was said to be in stable condition today. The female officer who sustained minor injuries during the confrontation — apparently she fell — was hospitalized as a “precaution” and released yesterday, deputies said.
