Mona Rodriguez, an 18-year-old woman reportedly shot in the head by Long Beach Unified School Police on Sept. 27, was taken off life support this week.

The Rodriguez family had been updating Mona’s condition through a GoFundMe fundraiser and announced her death, Wednesday.

“We wanted to let you know that Mona has been taken off of life support after donating her organs to save the life of 5 people,” Mona’s cousin Yessica Loza updated on the GoFundMe website. “We also wanted to let you know how the doctors and nurses gave Mona a hero’s celebration in the hallway as she was taken down to the operating room and they even played her favorite song for her. We are grateful for everyone, the help/support, the sweet messages, the donations and just everyone absolutely everyone who has just been there for the Rodriguez family through everything that’s been going on, so thank you!”

The Sept. 27 incident was caught on cell phone video, as Rodriguez was involved in a fight with a 15-year-old girl near Millikan High School in Long Beach. The video showed what appeared to be an officer reach into a car that Rodriguez had entered and open fire.

Later that day, Long Beach Police said it had responded to an “officer involved shooting,” noting it was not a Long Beach PD officer and the department was assisting in the investigation.

In critical condition, Rodriguez was then taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and given life support treatment, up until this week.

The officer, who was identified as Eddie Gonzalez by the Long Beach Post, was placed on paid administrative leave and as of Thursday, is being investigated as a homicide by Long Beach PD.

The family is seeking criminal charges filed against Gonzalez.

Rodriguez is survived by her 5-month-old daughter, mother and four brothers.
