A 14-year-old girl riding a bike in Compton was fatally shot over the weekend, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said.

The teenager was a gang member, cops said. Whoever shot her fled, and there's no good suspect description.

Here's what authorities say happened:

Deputies were called to a report of a shooting at Alameda Boulevard and Elm Street about 10:10 p.m. Saturday. The department states:

Upon their arrival, Deputies discovered the victim lying in the street suffering from several gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

CBS Los Angeles identified the girl as Alicia Gomez. Her mother told the station there was no reason she would have been targeted.

Witnesses said she was riding a bike, according to the Sheriff's Department, but deputies wouldn't say much about the suspect. They did say this was gang-related.

No weapon was recovered.
