We suspect this may just be another crafty angle in the Velveeta “shortage” conspiracy, but Kraft is recalling some of its Velveeta products because the labels inadvertently left off soy, an allergen, as an ingredient.

The foodmaker is recalling 1.77 million pounds of Kraft Velveeta Cheesy Skillets Singles Ultimate Cheeseburger Mac, according to the Associated Press. The products contain unlisted hydrolyzed soy protein and dried soy sauce and have expiration dates of March 2 to October 23 on them. They were sent to Kraft Foods distribution centers and retailers worldwide between May 2013 and January.

No other Velveeta or Kraft products are affected, and no illnesses have been reported. Consumers with questions can call the Kraft Foods consumer relations center at 1-800-396-5512.

Now, the latest on what Kraft is calling “Cheesepocalypse.” Velveeta posted a cutesy message on its official Tumblr page, eatliquidrgoldr, insisting that the so-called cheese-food shortage is in no way a “publicity stunt.” “We want you to hear directly from us that it's true – we are experiencing a temporary scarcity of our nation's most precious commodity: Liquid Gold. But please know that we are working tirelessly to get more Velveeta on store shelves as soon as possible,” the company says.

Sure, we believe them. Because, after all, Velveeta is so very, very difficult to make and requires such complicated ingredients, as Squid Ink's own blogger Malcolm Bedell* demonstrated on Maine television last week.
