Lovers of underground, progressive-house music and techno who may have seen the invitations to “Aeonica” at Los Angeles’ Sound Nightclub may have asked themselves, “Well, what is Aeonica?” In short, Aeonica is a collective of forward-thinking humanists and creatives. Led by the electronic dance music (EDM) DJ and producer, Jetzen, Aeonica is described as being, “the emanation of all light and sound.” What’s noteworthy is that their events invite patrons to not only get-down on the dancefloor and have a great time, but also to stop and think, if only for a moment. Their nightclub and festival events strive to be immersive experiences that incorporate storytelling beyond the usual fare of club dance events. Jetzen, Aeonica’s founder and lead music-maker, describes “the Aeonica” as an ancient society. The people attending their events are seen as “building the story of the next Aeon. We’re writing the story of the next 2,500 years.” Read on for more from our sit-down with Aeonica’s Jetzen ahead of the group’s April 25th event at Sound Nightclub L.A.

LA Weekly: For music-lovers not familiar with your style, can you describe your sound?

JETZEN: My sound lives in the broad genre of electronic music. However, it crosses various sub-genres, such as house, tech-house, organica and melodic techno. I like to call my sound “neo-primitive.” My music tends to contain sounds that come from the past, beginning with the most primitive era of human existence. Music is one of our first forms of artistic and social expression as we gathered around a fire, danced and beat on drums made of animal skins. Moving forward in time, my sounds of the more recent past may include recognizable vocals or samples of other artists’ music. Being that my music is primarily produced within the electronic world containing structured and repeatable patterns, it also can evoke the sounds of the future: synthesizers, digitized effects, and sounds seeming to emanate from other worlds and dimensions.

LA Weekly: What releases are you most known for, most proud of?

JETZEN: It’s difficult to say what I’m most known for, as I’ve only been producing and performing for a couple of years. However, I can say that I’m extremely proud of the album I produced and released last year called Book of Formation (Spotify, Apple Music). The concept of this album is that each of the 10 tracks represent basic storytelling building blocks, but which also have deep personal meaning in that they tell the story of my life.

LA Weekly: What releases are coming out next, that you’re most excited about?

JETZEN: I’m especially excited about a remix by Eran Hersch of one of my favorite tracks on Book of Formation, called, “Two Worlds.” We sometimes try to simultaneously live in two worlds, whether in a relationship or in our lifestyle. Sometimes two people in a relationship are each living in their own worlds, yet they try to live in a single world together, and that often doesn’t really work. For this remix, Eran has beautifully crafted his interpretation of the track. The building block was there and he used it to build upon as an accomplished artist and craftsman.

LA Weekly: Which other artists are you most passionate about, as a music-lover yourself? Likewise, which artists are you most similar to, sonically?

JETZEN: There are many artists that I have followed throughout my life, spanning decades of genres and styles, from the popular (Prince, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Flaming Lips, Johnny Cash), to the eclectic (16 Horsepower, Sigur Rós, Ben Folds). Even recently, my tastes quickly change from one moment to the next. As a performing DJ, I’m similar in sound to Solomun, Luciano, Kölsh, Adriatique, Paul kalkbrenner, Super Flu, and Andhim. As for the music I’m producing, it can be compared to Kölsh, Ben Böhmer, Camelphat, Ten Walls, Guy Gerber and Lane 8.

LA Weekly: Please tell us about the Aeonica event you plan on hosting at Sound Los Angeles, April 25th. What makes it unique or special? What can fans expect when walking through the door? What’s the scene that can be expected?

JETZEN: When Aeonica throws an event, we aspire to do more than deliver great music. Without sacrificing the sound and the craft of the DJs, we’ll weave in some degree of immersive storytelling. On April 25th, we are inviting guests to “Cross the Threshold” into the world of Aeonica since it is our LA debut. We will have the Aeonica Guardaeons there to guide guests to enter our giveaway for Premium VIP tickets to our travel experience and stage at RITVALES Festival in Medellin, Colombia, this November. The prize package will be offered through gameplay and our own special Techaeons, collectible tokens to another dimension.

LA Weekly: What’s the philosophy behind the Aeonica brand? What does the name signify? Why is this important to you as an artist?

JETZEN: Aeonica is the experience of multiple Aeons in a single moment. It is the aspiration to transcend to higher states of consciousness, to be teleported with light, sound and impressions to a transcendental state. Aeonica is from where light and sound emanate into the perceivable dimension. It is said to have been venerated and even fused with by some humans of an ancient society that goes by the same name. My sound as an artist is the Aeonica sound. It transcends time and space, it is neo-primitive. This makes its way into all my music. The intention for my music is to connect and lift up the listener.

LA Weekly: As Jetzen the DJ/producer, how do you translate the Aeonica message to party-goers when you play a live DJ set?

JETZEN: My intention as a live artist is to operate from a flow state. My hope is that this state penetrates my artistic expression and that the listeners feel nourished by the experience. At the end of the day, I want everyone to dance, move, and feel the music, to let themselves be free and have the time of their lives.

LA Weekly: What’s next on-the-horizon for Aeonica, Jetzen, and your electronic dance music community at large?

JETZEN: We want to create more experiences, more original music and more satisfied fans. We love our community and want to see it flourish. I believe Aeonica can do this. We have a wonderful team. As for Jetzen, being a DJ and performing in front of a group of any size is my most satisfying form of artistic expression. I am dedicated to my sound and to making more of it. Music is my sanctuary. It is my medicine and my sensual enjoyment. I hope everyone loves my music as much as I love making and playing it.
