So what if your legendary band performed at the Hollywood Bowl? Or CBGBs? Or the Apollo? How many singers can you go check out at the Echoplex that can boast of having performed at Twin Peaks' motherfucking Black Lodge, aka that creepy room with the red curtains and the backwards-speaking little guy in the red suit?

Only one: the one and very much only Jimmy Scott.

That's right, folks, the 86-year-old singer formerly known as "Little" Jimmy Scott and renowned for never having outgrown of his boy's contralto register (that's like a male soprano), is coming to town to interpret his repertoire of torch songs and magisterial covers--check out his definitive version of Lennon's "Jealous Guy." We were told by Echo management that the last time Scott played at their venues he had to be carried onstage on his wheelchair. But from a very young age Scott put a voice to dignified frailty, so the telltale signs of aging on his body now just match the poignancy of that unforgettable voice.

Needless to say, a Jimmy Scott appearance is an uncommon occurrence and it's also bound to be one of shows you'll be telling your grandchildren about, so there's no reason to stay home with his essential discography--Falling in Love is Wonderful (1963), The Source (1969) and his rediscovery albums, Dream and Heaven (1994, 1996).

Watch the indie mecca in Echo Park turn into a timeless supper club by the sheer magic of a man's ageless, genderless voice. P.s. Make sure to come very early: show's over at 10:30.

Jimmy Scott performs at the Echoplex, Fri. July. 22.

The Southwest Semifinals of the US Air Guitar Championship were held last Saturday at the historic Troubadour Club in West Hollywood. The event determined who would compete as regional representatives at the 2014 National Finals in Kansas City on August 9th. The colorful contestants (many of whom opted for elaborate codpieces) were judged by comedians Kristen Schaal and the Sklar Brothers. The top score was awarded to crowd-surfing guitarist Kingslayer, the mother of a teenage son who also competed wearing little more than an American flag bathing suit. All photos by Gustavo Turner.
