One of the biggest surprises of the post-'80s era is how hugely influential Depeche Mode--the on-paper difficult band that peddled adult sexual fantasies to several generations of goth-inclined teens--turned out to have been.

Go to any club where the syntheratti congregate and chances are every other song sounds like it could easily segue into "I Just Can't Get Enough" (ahem, Cold Cave).

But Depeche Mode's influence has even permeated into non-techno areas of the music world. Next week, acclaimed jazz singer Patti Austin will be releasing a new album called Sound Advice (Shanachie Records).
