It's a bill made for date night on Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl as some of music's favorite collaborative couples team up to provide a soundtrack for your wine and cheese.
Of course, the Swell Season -- Glen Hansard of Irish rockers band the Frames and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová -- once were more than just collaborators, around the time of Once, the 2007 flick that earned the duo an Academy Award for the song "Falling Slowly." Their boy-girl folk has done anything but fall slowly since, with last year's album Strict Joy earning cuddles from critics, and, quite possibly, plenty of air time over candlelight dinners.
(For something really surprising, though, check out the Swell Season's clothing company-sponsored cover of the 1976 disco tune "Young Hearts Run Free.")
By comparison, the boy-girl pop of She & Him might seem like heavy metal, but it seems that nobody hates on M. Ward or fails to swoon over Zooey Deschanel, even if some of us are apprehensive about them together. Their follow-up to Volume One, titled Volume Two of all things, is notable for its cover of NRBQ's 1977 hit "Ridin' in My Car."
And hopefully all you young couples will be comfortably seated for openers the Bird and the Bee, the pairing of L.A. chanteuse Inara George and producer/keyboardist Greg Kurstin. From their arty, jazz-pop beginning, George and Kurstin have flown surprising places -- like into the rock 'n' soul vortex for this spring's Interpreting the Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates.
