As anybody who's witnessed their spectacles at Coachella or the Detour Festival (R.I.P.) can testify, it's all about Gogol Bordello's live shows.

Nothing esteemed producer Rick Rubin could have done on the gypsy punks' recently released fifth album Trans-Continental Hustle -- short of maybe integrating some magical digital cattle prod -- can match the Burning Man-meets-slam dancing energy the nine-piece ensemble brings to its concerts.

Besides presiding over his fiddle-, accordion- and percussion-wielding bandmates, singer-guitarist Eugene Hütz will be doing double duty tonight, high-tailing from the first of his band's two-night stand at the Mayan Theatre to do a DJ set for the RSVP-only It's a School Night party at Bardot (where the like-minded Fishtank Ensemble, along with Kenneth Pattengale, perform).

Apparently Hütz has mad DJ skills too. It figures.

Elsewhere: London four-piece Athlete, touring behind its third album Black Swan, brings its preening, emotional pop to the Troubadour. ... Her new album Can't Be Tamed (oh, really?) about to hit stores, Miley Cyrus visits the House of Blues for a show that will be streamed live at Miley.MTV.com, Miley.VH1.com, Miley.CMT.com, Miley.LogoTV.com and maybe a few other Miley places the Internet hasn't invented yet. ... And Abe Vigoda romps into the Echo as support for the third week of Rainbow Arabia's free residency.

Also: The undercard for We Barbarians' residency at Spaceland pretty much rocks -- Red Cortez, La Ghost and Pacific Hurt; Sweaters (along with Rafter) support Line and Circle's residency at the Silverlake Lounge; and Nu Sensae plays Pehrspace.

The Southwest Semifinals of the US Air Guitar Championship were held last Saturday at the historic Troubadour Club in West Hollywood. The event determined who would compete as regional representatives at the 2014 National Finals in Kansas City on August 9th. The colorful contestants (many of whom opted for elaborate codpieces) were judged by comedians Kristen Schaal and the Sklar Brothers. The top score was awarded to crowd-surfing guitarist Kingslayer, the mother of a teenage son who also competed wearing little more than an American flag bathing suit. All photos by Gustavo Turner.
