A bunch of writers threatening to go on strike probably doesn't rate very high on our list of worries, but maybe it should?
Six of downtown L.A.'s glorious movie palaces and vaudeville stages opened up to the public on Saturday, Jan. 28, for the third annual Night on Broadway. Outside the main stages, it was, as the name of the event suggested, the people on Broadway, under the evening sky that defined the cultural force that is Los Angeles.
Over the Jan. 21-22 weekend, the Anaheim Convention Center welcomed the annual National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Show. With hundreds of vendors showcasing some of the latest, rarest and coolest in music equipment, instruments, recording gear and other pro audio products, NAMM did not disappoint. Consumers, artists and merchandisers from across the globe flocked to SoCal to network, learn about new products and, of course, play music. All photographs by Hannah Verbeuren.
Harry Potter fans are an extremely passionate, tight-knit community.
Ever since the books first came out, fans have been getting together online and in person to discuss J.K. Rowling's wizarding world and the cast of beloved characters she created. In 2007, the minds behind Harry Potter fan site The Leaky Cauldron got together to form an exclusive Harry Potter fan convention, which they appropriately named LeakyCon.
LeakyCon is known for its Wizard Rock concerts, fervent fan-fiction discussions, cosplay and cast-member panels. Since it began in Boston in 2009, LeakyCon has been hosted by cities from Orlando to Chicago. Last week and weekend, Burbank got its turn.

Cassandra Peterson — the actress who's spent the last 35 years bringing to life beloved B-movie maven and pop-culture icon Elvira — hosted a spectacular soiree on the rooftop of the Roosevelt Hotel to celebrate the publishing of her new "coffin-table" book, Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark: A Photographic Retrospective of the Queen of Halloween.
Guests included Dita Von Teese, Frances Cobain, Dave Navarro, Julie Newmar, Perez Hilton, Jackie Beat and a slew of other L.A. party people. Didn't make it to the party? Peterson is signing copies of the book — which is filled with more than 300 images of the gothic sex symbol — at the Barnes & Noble at the Grove on Oct. 26.
Ghouls, ghosts and goblins arose from the Dark Harbor to take over the Queen Mary on opening night, Thursday, Sept. 29. The annual event features six haunted mazes, a 4-D theater experience, hundreds of monsters, DJs, cabanas and fire dancers. Dark Harbor runs for 22 haunted evenings through Oct. 31.
