Synergy

Choreographers Regina Klenjoski and Monica Favand found a way around the dilemma of fitting music to their movement ideas: They commissioned their own original scores from composers Ron Bartlett, Charlie Campagna and Moira Smiley. Synergy, a joint concert by the Regina Klenjoski Dance Company and Favand’s TRIP Dance Theatre, features new choreography to accompany the commissioned music, performed live by the TRIP Music Ensemble and Moira Smiley & VOCO. Each of the three composers contributed sections for Klenjoski’s The Black Drim, a consideration of her Macedonian heritage and the still-simmering struggles in this part of the former Yugoslavia. Moving to two different parts of the globe, Favand’s Equinox draws on a Malaysian folk dance backed by Campagna’s Brazilian-tinged guitar score. Bartlett injected a soundscape of electronics, guitar and vocals into Favand’s Tether, while Smiley provided the music and vocals for Shadows & Light, a duet for Favand and Taryn Wayne. Two companies, three composers and four premieres promise a kaleidoscopic evening of new dance and music. Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hlywd.; Sat., Sept. 23, 8 p.m.; $25, $12 students & children under 12. (323) 461-3673 or www.fordamphitheatre.com.
