In three new works, artistic director Jose Vences draws inspiration from traditional folkloric dance to explore Mexican fables and legends rife with fantasy and magic. La Loteria conjures up familiar figures from the childrens card game el diablo, la dama, el apache and sets them dancing. The second piece, Un Mito Entre El Maiz y Las Flores (A Myth Among the Corn and the Flowers) recounts a Mesoamerican legend about a goddess quest for true love, while a Mexican fable about rag dolls who come to life and dance with elves is the source for the third, Era Tiempo de Duendes (It Was the Time of Elves). Popular repertoire dances from several states will take the audience on a quick tour of Mexico to complete the program.
