Collage Dance Theatre redefines the spin cycle

Was it really 20 years ago that the first laundromat was hijacked by Heidi Duckler and her audacious dance company? The now-legendary debut brought new meaning to "site-specific" as Collage dancers took over a now-departed Montana Avenue laundromat, leaving patrons gape-jawed as washers, dryers and baskets of laundry became grist for a variety of choreographic explorations. Since then, Laundromatinee has been reprised twice in Culver City and once in New York, where The New York Times' Jennifer Dunning aptly described it as "funny, occasionally dark and strangely poignant." Lately Duckler and her crew have been working on the saga of Beowulf, but Laundromatinee is the company's signature piece and a subtle reminder of its tremendous contributions in drawing attention to disappearing icons in L.A.'s cultural landscape. The initial performance sold out right after it was announced; at press time, two added shows had also sold out (only so much room in a laundromat).
