Mything in action: L.A. Contemporary Dance Company

Located just a hop, skip and a leap from downtown’s Union Station at the Brewery Arts Complex — a visitor-friendly artist colony with free parking — Diavolo Dance Space has emerged as a significant venue for adventurous contemporary dance. L.A. Contemporary Dance Company takes over the space for two weekends to present “Modern Myths & Monsters,” a repertory program of four new works by three challenging choreographers: Mecca Vazie Andrews, Nichol Mason and Kate Hutter, all familiar figures on the local scene. Their new dance works are described as sharing “a common theme of reinterpreting history, predicting the future, and exposing the myths and monsters that have shaped our physical and emotional evolution.” Last year, the troupe experimented with two “pay what you think it’s worth” programs and got great response from enthusiastic audiences composed of at-risk youth. Hoping to build on that success, LACDC is devoting two Thursday shows to those youth groups. The rest of us can choose from six other performances. Diavolo Dance Space at the Brewery, 616 N. Moulton Ave., dwntwn.; Fri.-Sat., April 18-19, & April 25-26, 8 p.m.; Sun., April 20 & 27, 5 p.m.; $20-$25; $15 students. (800) 838-3006 or www.lacontemporarydance.org.
