Ahn Trio shines under the night sky

By Mary Beth Crain
Wednesday, May 30, 2007 - 12:00 pm
In the classical music world, the Ahn Trio remains unique. The three sisters — Angella on violin and the twins, Maria and Lucia, on cello and piano/keyboards — have been in the spotlight since they were tots in South Korea. They barnstormed Juilliard, got “Asian-American Whiz Kid” status in Time magazine and, with their long, straight tresses and skinny kool looks making them kinda the Olsen Triplets with an Asian flair, have become the leaders in the new generation of classical/crossover musicians. This week, the Ahns kick off the Ford Amphitheatre’s “Chamber Music Under the Stars” series with the West Coast premiere of Kenji Bunch’s Danceband, a rollicking work written just for them that, in the words of the composer, “celebrates the inextricable link between music and dance.” With sections like “Slip Jig,” “Sarabande,” “Waltz” and “Disco Boogie,” Danceband rocks, just like the Ahns. The program of works either written or transcribed specifically for the trio also includes Paul Chihara’s Orchids, Chick Corea’s Addendum, Michael Nyman’s Big My Secret, from the film score for The Piano, and more. John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hlywd.; Fri., June 1, 8:30 p.m.; $25, $12 students & children 12 & under. (323) 461-3673.
