Cecconi's Christmas Timpano

You might recognize the signature dome-shaped dish from Stanley Tucci's film Big Night. Due to the popularity of the timpano, guests must reserve 48 hours in advance.

WHEN: Tuesday, Dec. 24, 5-9 p.m.

WHERE: Cecconi's, 8764 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood; 310-432-2000.

Christmas is known as the season of excess -- and excess counter space, and judging by the proliferation of silly, useless and just plain dumb kitchen appliances that seem, like egg nog, only to appear on store shelves during the spendiest time of the year. Aunt Ethel might be a tough case on your holiday gift list, but as tempting as it may seem, keep those sawbucks in your pocket and just get her a box of candy instead of something that will clutter up her already cramped cabinets, leading her to curse your name for the next 12 months.

Turn the page for our top 10 dumbest kitchen gadgets -- with suggestions for better options. Consider it a little holiday shopping intervention.

Christmas Dinner Table - COCOLEROC VIA FLICKR
No matter what tradition you subscribe to, you still might want to eat out on December 25th. But, you know the drill, the stores are closed and you might not want what's in the fridge or on the table or at your mothers house and aren't planning a feast.

The streets will be magically empty, so the city is yours to eat your way across.

Options may seem limitless if you're heading to the San Gabriel Valley in particular, but keep in mind, Christmas is on a Tuesday this year, and many restaurants in the area are always closed on Tuesdays. Plan accordingly.

If neither of those were your plan anyway, we found 10 spots that open for you to choose from. While not the first places people might think to head to, they are all pretty great in their own way. Just please remember, while this is your day off, everyone there is working hard, so make sure to tip extra generously and maybe even take that extra step and ask the manager to get your tip to the kitchen staff as well.

For those inclined to have someone else cook on Christmas eve, there is an incredible assortment of fine options available, but reservations are going quickly, so you'd better make one, soon, if that's your plan.

Most hotels offer a standard up-scale Christmas dinner and pretty much every restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley will be open and blissfully ignoring the holiday. If you are looking for something a little more festive though, we have you covered, with something for everyone.
