Back in 2012, longtime L.A. favorite Cassell's Hamburgers shuttered their last location with a promise to reopen in Koreatown's Normandie Hotel.

The restaurant was originally opened in 1948 by Al Cassell, who died in 2010 at 98. The business had moved a few times and eventually been sold to new owners after Cassell retired. The owners of the Normandie purchased the business in mid-2012 with plans to move it into the hotel. This coming Monday, that plan will come to fruition.

The pumpkin spice latte, long the punch line of every insult about the so-called "basic bitch," has reached a new level of mockery: its own seasonal Umami burger, which is even more ridiculous and calorie-laden than any basic beverage you might find at Starbucks. Umami, which issued a press release urging diners to throw on their Ugg boots on the way to "yogilates," is clearly in on the joke.

Topped with garlic aioli and squash tempura, the beef patty is spiced with Mascarpone, glazed with coffee and stuffed between two Umami-branded buns, so it's like having a holiday breakfast, lunch and dinner all on one plate. The burger debuts tomorrow for just $4, which is about the price of an actual pumpkin spice latte, if you're willing to brave the pumpkin-crazed masses.

To the list of great things to eat at Grand Central Market, add yet one more: Belcampo Meat Co. just added a Fast Burger to its menu. And it's $5.

The Fast Burger is essentially your ideal burger stand or drive-through burger: a three-ounce patty made with grass-fed beef, melted housemade American cheese, lettuce, tomato, thin slices of onions. That's it. It's simple. It's terrific.

In our already burger-soaked city, all of a sudden it's practically impossible to keep up with the flood of new burgers on the scene. It seems as though every day a new burger-centric spot is opening up. In the hopes of giving you some insight into a few of these new options, I checked out three of L.A.'s new burgers and gave them a taste test.

Haché LA has been in soft-open mode for a few weeks now on Sunset Blvd. in Silver Lake, but the hours have been dinner-only. Today marks the restaurant's grand opening, and they're marking that milestone with new hours and a burger giveaway.

Haché is owned by Michael Schepers, who also owns Mick's Karma Bar in Irvine. Mick's Karma Bar has become well known for its French-style steak haché burgers — "haché" being the type of burger as well as the restaurant's name — which are made from freshly ground sirloin that's seasoned on the outside, as you would a steak.

Three words: Bone. Marrow. Burger. It was only a matter of time.

Typically only found sitting in the bone at upscale restaurants, bone marrow is beginning to peek into the world of burgers in L.A. San Francisco got a jump-start on the idea of adding bone marrow to a humble burger a year or so ago. ROOTS at Black Hogg in Silver Lake has recently been offering a bone marrow burger, although quantities are limited.

Now Eureka!, a burger and craft beer gastropub with locations in Hawthorne, Huntington Beach and Claremont, has recently added a bone marrow burger to its menu.

Here's a way to get people in the door: The new Pasadena meat-focused restaurant Meat District Co. is giving away free burgers to the first 100 people in their door , Tues., Sept 9. But not just one free burger — they're giving each of these 100 people a free burger every week for a year. That's a lot of free burgers.

Meat District Co. is, as you might imagine, a meat-themed restaurant serving burgers and steaks that they bill as "100% natural ‘Never Ever’" meat, meaning it's hormone, steroid and antibiotic free. They serve a bunch of different kinds of burgers — an American burger called "old faithful," a truffle burger, a surf and turf burger, salmon, turkey and veggie burgers.

Google maps approximates the town of Whittier as 30 minutes outside of central Los Angeles. And although many downtown Angelenos regularly travel that distance battling their way to the Westside, far fewer trek further inland to investigate the eastern edges of the county.

Tony Alcazar, head chef and co-owner of The Bottle Room in Whittier, and a few of his peers — specifically Bizarra Capital's Ricardo Diaz — are spearheading a culinary uprising in the region.

If you love hamburgers, this is perhaps your favorite time of year: when Andre Guerrero and the folks at Oinkster gear up for their annual Burger Week, an epic weeklong celebration of the burger. This is the fourth Burger Week, taking place at the Oinkster in Eagle Rock - not the second, recently opened Oinkster in Hollywood, which will have its normal menu.

For each of seven days, beginning on Monday, June 2, and running through Sunday, June 8, Oinkster will feature a specific new burger, available only for that day. As you might imagine, people line up not only for the burgers themselves but for the distinction of eating every one of the seven new burgers. These is called the Burger Challenge, and the people who rise to it are dubbed Burgerlords. Of course they are.

Last year there were apparently 235 Burgerlords, each of whom got a special T-shirt. This year, there will be a different T-shirt, of course, since these are like concert shirts for food. Your Burgerlord T-shirt, my Jack White T-shirt. (At least mine doesn't have garlic aioli on it. Yet.)

"This year the burger ideas were conceived months in advance; the first Burger Week was put together in two weeks," Guerrero told us by email. "We realized after the success of the first one that there was a lot of pressure to deliver something different and more distinctive. Each year the crowds get bigger and some of the burgers get a little crazier."

So what seven burgers can you expect this year? Guerrero and company shared the details with us. Because it's nice to be able to visualize your week's worth of food in advance, isn't it.

recall of nearly 2 million pounds of ground beef due to a potentially deadly strain of E.coli has expanded to include distributors to retailers and restaurants nationwide. But unfortunately, federal officials won't tell us which ones. (Please, please not In-N-Out.)

Food Safety and Inspection Service officials aren't required to say which "retail establishments," restaurants or fast food joints served the tainted hamburger linked to the largest recall of its kind in six years. They'll only tell us that the meat was produced by Detroit's Wolverine Packing Co. between March 31 and April 18. The company issued a voluntary recall for 1.8 million pounds of ground beef Monday, proving that you should never let wolverines work in slaughterhouses.
