Is bacon still a thing? It is? Huh. Interesting. Well, I guess then you'll want to know about this bacon festival happening in Long Beach in August.

Branded as the festival for "extreme bacon lovers," the Big Bite Bacon Fest will be coming to the Queen Mary, the vintage ocean liner docked in Long Beach, on Saturday, August 2. The festival will feature chefs cooking a bunch of bacon-laced foods, beer and a bacon-cooking competition. Oh, and a bacon wedding (as in, people actually getting married, the bride carrying a bacon bouquet, etc.).

Do you want an alarm clock that assaults you with a puff of bacon scent? Oscar Mayer has an app for that.

Better known for it's bologna and hot dogs, the "meat" company has introduced its Wake Up & Smell the Bacon device,  which transforms your iPhone into a bacon-scented alarm clock, PC Magazine reports  The accompanying app is already available for free download, but to get the device that attaches to the bottom of your phone and delivers the scent, you have to apply online. U.S. consumers have until April 4 to fill out the online entry form to become an Official Bacon Beta Tester. (The "value" of the bacon-puffer is $40.)

Wired might not the first place you think of when you're looking to read about food -- because God knows you don't do enough of that already -- but maybe it will be now. The magazine recently partnered with Food Network to analyze the 49,733 recipes and 906,539 comments on the network's website and presented all sorts of fun findings via nifty interactive infographics. The first subject of analysis: Bacon. Of course.

Bacon - MALCOLM BEDELL/FROM AWAY
We'll try to put this delicately. Men who eat a lot of bacon might have, well, it could ... it could affect their ability to become daddies, as well as their overall manliness.

In more scientific terms: Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health have found that men who eat lots of processed meat such as bacon and sausage have lower sperm quality than men who don't. On the other hand, men who have a diet heavy in fish have better sperm and more of it, thus making them fertility powerhouses -- if that's what you're after.

Bacon caramel popcorn - PHOTO: JOYOSITY
We're told April 6 is National Caramel Popcorn Day, but aside from the concession stands at The Arclight and Dodger Stadium, we're not seeing too much caramel corn in this town. Instead, a different kind of corn is popping up on L.A. menus, and it's got one thing in common: bacon. Sometimes, you can even find it doused in bourbon. In honor of this (questionable) national holiday, we recommend ditching the caramel and diving into more meaty -- and sometimes alcoholic -- popcorn offerings at these five spots.

DENNY'S
  • Denny's
Now that bacon has been embraced by Denny's, can someone please declare that the trend is finally, mercifully, over? Perhaps Mayor Bloomberg can do this for us, since we seem to be between mayors at the moment. Giant soft drinks, cigarettes -- bacon is arguably just as much of a threat to our national health. Or, if not our physical health, at least our mental health.

Mmmm ... bacon - MIKEYWALLY VIA FLICKR
Can it really have only been a couple of days ago? Yes, news of the porkocalypse began to spread just earlier this week after a British trade organization, the National Pig Assn., put out a press release stating that "A world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable."

The reason?

There are all kinds of ways to gauge when something is done, dead, over as a trend. When your mom knows about it, when network news does a trend piece on it, when it hooks up with another stupid trend and makes disgusting trend babies. But nothing says DEAD for a food trend like Burger King jumping on the bandwagon. Behold, the sad, sad, dead, over Burger King bacon sundae.

Lou's Pig Candy - RON DOLLETTE
  • Ron Dollette
  • Lou's Pig Candy

Several weeks ago, when it was announced that Lou Amdur was selling his wine bar, LOU, we offered a parting culinary keepsake for Squid Ink readers -- the recipe for LOU's famous pig candy. Want to know the origin story of this sweet, bacon-y side dish? If so, forget about the chocolate-dipped pork morsel you read about on Slashfood as well as that anecdote about Lou Amdur roaming through the hills of Kentucky and running into a mystical sugarpig and... (OK, we made that one up). The real birth of Pig Candy involves a cold night, a roaring bonfire, high school stoners (implied) and an enterprising teenager. To read about it -- and for the recipe -- turn the page.
