Does the farmers market ever feel a little overwhelming to you? Do you ever wonder how the pros approach all that produce? A couple of events coming up give you the chance to find out. A Sustainable Kitchen is an organization out of Venice that aims to bring awareness to sustainability issues. Right now the group is focused on fighting food deserts and has come up with a few events involving local chefs and farmers markets to help fund those efforts.

The "chefs walkabout" series features local chefs at local farmers markets. A Sustainable Kitchen describes them like this: "The Walkabouts are on site 'tutorials' where chefs share their personal and professional insights on how to best utilize the seasonal bounty of the farmers market. Each one will benefit a specific effort to fight local food deserts."

The first walkabout, to be held on Wednesday, March 26, from 4-5:30 p.m., will feature Sqirl chef-owner Jessica Koslow. Koslow, of course, is known for her gorgeous jams and preserves, as well as her fantastic cooking at Sqirl. She'll lead participants through the Altadena farmers market, and proceeds will go to the Altadena Community Garden.

The second walkabout, in early April, will feature Rustic Canyon's Jeremy Fox, who will guide participants around the Santa Monica farmers market. It will benefit the New Village Charter High School's school garden and nutritional class program.

A Sustainable Kitchen's summer and fall schedules will include Valerie Gordon of Valerie Confections, Ari Taymor of Alma, and Ray Garcia of Fig, and will be held at markets around the city.

Tickets to the 3/26 event with Koslow can be purchased here.
