We told you a few weeks ago about 1321, the taproom and restaurant with chef Greg Paul (formerly of The Oaks Gourmet Market) behind the stoves. Now, we have a few more details.

It's opening May 6th, or this Friday. The decor is the faddish rustic-yet-contemporary look i.e. exposed brick and modern booths. There will be more than 50 craft beers available (not sure how many will be on tap). The menu is stocked with smoked short ribs, flatbread, chile and garlic peanuts, ale-braised mussels and, naturally, a burger. Sure, the word "gastropub" has been tossed around an awful lot lately, thanks to a spate of recent openings (The Tripel, The Fat Dog, King's Row, City Tavern), but it seems 1321 is actually trying to earn the moniker.

In Los Angeles especially, but increasingly across the country, restaurants are either switching to tasting menus, putting a greater focus on a tasting-menu option (while offering à la carte items as well), or opening as tasting-menu operations from day one. The format that used to be the calling card of only the fanciest of restaurants is becoming ubiquitous, even at places where the waiter calls you “dude” and there isn’t a white tablecloth in sight.

The truck stopped at Redondo Beach Dog Park Friday morning entertaining the pups with treats, a photo-booth and play zone.
