Just before Christmas, Kris Ohlenkamp, of the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society, discovered the surprise clear-cutting and bulldozing of 40 acres of rich wetlands and woodlands in Sepulveda Basin, undertaken without a single public hearing by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Audubon chapter has posted these "Before and After" shots on its website showing the seemingly pointless destruction of prized wildlife habitat. L.A. Weekly freelancer Beth Barrett walked the muddy scene of the ecodisaster for additional "after" photos. Critics are calling for a top-level investigation.
