Your Perfect Summer Party Wine: Franz Etz Grüner Veltliner
Franz Etz Grüner Veltliner -- good luck saying that ten times fast, especially after you've had a couple glasses of this Austrian wine.
This is a dry, crisp white wine that we first tasted at Domaine LA but have spotted at a handful of local wine shops including Bar Covell and K&L Wine Merchants. In the summer, it's our go-to white wine for low-key parties and potlucks. Apparently, we're not the only ones. Domaine LA's owner, Jill Bernheimer, tells us she sells cases of the stuff like its water. No wonder.
The Etz Grüner Veltliner has a mellow flavor, a hint of ripe fruit and a light finish that pairs well with a broad range of foods: grilled meats, salads, fruit. It's also a great value, generally selling for $11-14.
The bottle has a screw-off top, so no fiddling with messy corkscrews at hot summer picnics. Plus, it comes in a full 1-liter bottle, as opposed to most wines, which come in a 750-millileter bottles. (Most Grüner Veltliners are sold in 1L bottles.) If you're a savvy host or bar owner trying to stretch every penny, you get an extra pour from a bottle of Franz Etz. It's a marriage of practicality and quality rarely achieved.
