From the downsides of roomy chicken cages to the upside of avocados, these are the food news stories that caught our attention this week:

It's been a busy week in the Eater universe, with national restaurant critic Bill Addison's first list of the 38 essential restaurants in the country dropping on Thursday. L.A. garnered three spots on the list for Trois Mec, Chi Spacca and La Casita Mexicana. No matter what you think of Addison's choices, the simple feat of eating 263 restaurant meals in the 9 months he's been on the job in order to compose the list is impressive in and of itself. Eater L.A. also has a list of the 20 most anticipated openings of 2015, which is worth perusing. 

Someone in Japan is making wine for cats. Meow Meow Nouveau. So there's that. 

A new study shows that avocados help lower cholesterol

All of a sudden everyone is talking about bone broth. Which is confusing to many of us, including our favorite domestic goddess

Um, foie gras, foie gras, foie gras. It's back. You have probably read enough. In case you haven't, here's the New York Times take on the subject

In other California food legal news, a law just went into effect that mandates larger cages for chickens. Here's an interesting story from Vice's Munchies about whether or not that's a good thing.
