Where the Chefs Eat: Rustic Canyon's Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan
Where the Chefs Eat is an ongoing series in which we ask a local chef to give us his or her favorite dining options. This week, we talk to Josh Loeb, co-chef/owner with his wife, Zoe Nathan, of Rustic Canyon, Huckleberry and Milo & Olive, about where the two eat out when they're not cooking, at home or testing for Nathan's upcoming cookbook.
"We don't eat out that much, we're homebodies, especially with [our son] Milo being 2 and Zoe recipe testing for her cookbook almost every night these days. When we do go out, we go out for sushi at least half of those meals.
"We love Kiriko on Sawtelle and we always sit in front of Tomo (he's at the farthest end of the sushi bar). He knows us well. We order yellowtail sashimi sliced very thin; scallop sushi, which is served very simply with a little sea salt and yuzu; plus whatever else looks good that day. Milo isn't always the most patient diner but he loves Tomo and likes sitting at the sushi bar and eats avocado rolls and miso soup.
"We also really like Shima Sushi on Abbot Kinney and love the prepared dishes there as well, like the lotus root and their house-made tofu.
"We recently went to The Spice Table and to Night + Market and really loved both of those places. Bryant at the Spice Table is such a talented chef and good person, and the food there is so soulful. We loved the Laksa seafood curry and anything off the grill.
"At Night + Market we ate pretty much everything on the menu. We loved the whole fish with the garlic curry sauce.
"Growing up on the Westside, Bay Cities [Deli] always has been and still is an institution for us. I love a meatball sub, hot pastrami or turkey sandwich with hot peppers."
