With childhood dreams of opening her own retro ice cream parlor, Farah Gast is off to a running start with Cookie Munch, a dessert/hot dog shop she opened February 6th in Tarzana. Cookie Munch doles out classic Dreyer's ice cream flavors and various toppings, an array of freshly baked cookies, Hebrew National hot dogs, gourmet popcorn, cheesecake and root beer floats. Spending much of her teenage years frequenting Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour and Fosselman's Ice Cream Company in Alhambra, Gast was mesmerized by mounds of ice cream piled sky high and what seemed to be a never-ending supply of candy. Inspired by classic ice cream parlors and Diddy Riese in Westwood Village, Gast hopes her business is as warmly welcomed in her own community, where she has lived for over 20 years.
Neighborhood kids have fun with the secret menu, Gast explains, which includes items such as "pop cream." Hint, it has something to do with pop rocks. And next month the owner plans on giving back to local kids with a fundraising event benefiting Sunrise Little League, a team her son played on many years ago. "It [Cookie Munch] is a place where kids can come hang out and chill," she said. To make it affordable for everyone, the menu includes $3 ice cream sandwiches and $5 Lunch Munch specials, which come with a hot dog, chips, drink and ice cream sandwich.
