[Updated] Bon Appétit Names Adam Rapoport New Editor-in-Chief

Update: Over at The New York Times yesterday, Julia Moskin caught up with newly named Bon Appétit editor-in-chief Adam Rapoport, hours after he was officially named to the post on Monday. Rapoport, who is 40 and likes to cook and play golf with Justin Timberlake, spent the night grilling lamb and making French fries. And talking to reporters. As Moskin writes:

Although Mr. Rapoport and Condé Nast remained cagey about his plans for the magazine, he will most likely be given a great deal of leeway. "Adam has a lot of hiring to do" said Thomas Wallace, editorial director of Condé Nast, confirming that the magazine will, in a sense, be rebuilt from the ground up in New York. Mr. Rapoport admitted to a personal passion for page design and photography. (Currently, Bon Appétit is most notable for its dramatic "hard light" shots, which make the food look like a celebrity caught leaving a nightclub.) There will be more softness, more texture, more luminosity, he said. And just possibly, more celebrities.

[Updated] Bon Appétit Names Adam Rapoport New Editor-in-Chief

Update: Condé Nast editorial director Thomas J. Wallace announced today, as expected, that Adam Rapoport will be Bon Appétit magazine's new editor-in-chief. The appointment is effective later this month. Rapoport is currently style editor at GQ, has been with Condé Nast for over 10 years, and has covered food since 1995. According to the press release sent out this morning from Bon Appétit, Rapoport edited the restaurant section at Time Out New York for three years and worked as an editor and writer for the James Beard Foundation's Publications Office.

"Adam is an accomplished editor," said Wallace. "The enthusiasm and engaging mix he brought to GQ's style pages, together with the expertise he brought to their food coverage, perfectly positions him to lead Bon Appétit." Rapoport is also a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, although his California ties perhaps won't mean quite so much now that Bon Appétit will be located in New York rather than here in Los Angeles.

Our original story, published on Friday:

According to WWD Media, Adam Rapoport has been named the new editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit. For which news we thank Sam Sifton, who just tweeted the report. Rapoport, previously style editor at GQ, succeeds longtime Bon Appétit editor-in-chief, Barbara Fairchild, who announced that she was stepping down in September. Bon Appétit is in the process of relocating to New York City from Los Angeles. A formal announcement of Rapoport's selection is expected as early as Monday.
