Yes, we already covered Los Angeles' 10 Best Sandwiches. But as we all know, this is a vast city and sometimes a true gem gets overlooked. In this case, that would be the Tunisian Tuna sandwich at Tarte Tatin Bakery in Beverly Hills, and we suggest you eat, this, now.
While mostly known for their outstanding croissants, jams and pastries in general, this $12, 12-inch sandwich is not to be missed, and it's big enough to serve two people, making it a bargain if you're willing to share.
What makes it so unique? It's tuna, with potato, mashed up with house-made harissa, then topped with slices of hard-boiled egg, pickles, olives and unexpected bits of salty preserved lemon. With the layers of different ingredients, it doesn't so much meld as it pops. The whole thing is soft, made doubly so by being served on a pillowy French roll that's made on site by chef Kobi Tobiano. It is a bakery after all. The plate also comes with sliced tomatoes, more olives and small, extra spicy pickled peppers with a hint of olive oil and salt. Sometimes when we're feeling sassy, we add all three to the roll as well.
It's a delightful departure from what we traditionally think of as a tuna sandwich, which is what makes it so alluring.
The sweet little three year old café is in a mini-mall, so there's free parking and indoor and outdoor seating which always makes a place more desirable to us. Considering the area, don't be surprised that most of the people there are ladies, lunching. On this odd stretch of Olympic Blvd. that doesn't have a lot of commerce or food choices, it's a perfect place to dine if you're in the neighborhood, or it's worth going out of your way for.
