Thursday Night Plan: Guerrilla Tacos at Silverlake Wine
Guerrilla Tacos' Ahi tuna and sea urchin tostada with furikake, raw tomatillo chile, herbs and lime
For lovers of Guerrilla Tacos, the usual beverage of choice to go with chef Wes Avila's creations is coffee. The taco truck with a cult following for its gourmet tacos has generally parked in front of the city's high-end coffee shops during the daytime. But for the last few months, Avila and crew have been camped out front of the original Silverlake Wine on Thursday evenings.
The truck's appearance on Glendale Boulevard coincides with Silverlake Wine's Thursday evening wine tastings, wherein the shop serves a flight of wines from a select producer or importer for around $15 per person. The setup with Guerrilla Tacos is, you order and pay at the truck outside, and they bring the food to you inside the shop when it's ready. Which means you can enjoy some of the city's most creative street food alongside a flight of very cool wines.
To give you an idea of what these matchups might entail, a few menu items from recent Thursdays are: ahi tuna and sea urchin tostada with furikake, raw tomatillo chile, herbs and lime (pictured); quesadilla with roast pork, fried egg, black beans, plantains, Oaxacan cheese, arugula and chile; and local baby squid taco with burnt tomato chile, pickled radish, cilantro.
Tonight's flight options from Silverlake Wine are a white flight (not that kind) from Northern Rhone producer Yves Cuilleron and a flight of all-Austrian reds. The experience of eating Guerrilla Tacos with well-chosen wines will likely have you hoping for the day when Avila has a sit-down spot of his own where the wine flows freely.
Thursday Night Flight Night runs from 5 to 9 p.m. at Silverlake Wine. Guerrilla Tacos is there the whole time, unless the food runs out early.
