The Want Ads: McMurdo Station Executive Chef
McMurdo Station, Antarctica
Thanks to the HuffPo for news of this want ad, which is looking pretty damn good right now. McMurdo Station, the research community in Antarctica, has just posted a job listing for an executive chef. The chef would be responsible for the operation of the McMurdo Station Kitchen and two remote dining facilities. Here's the Denver Craigslist posting.
Required experience includes a Bachelor's Degree, a Culinary Arts Degree, a minimum of 7 years cooking experience, and at least 3 years of supervisory responsibilities. Experience working in a federal government contract environment is "highly desirable." And, of course, the qualified person needs to be able to deploy to Antarctica for up to 7 months per year.
McMurdo Station was established by the U.S. in 1956, and was built on the volcanic rock of Hut Point Peninsula on Ross Island, the farthest south solid ground accessible by ship. Check out this virtual tour, courtesy of the University of Chicago's Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica.
With the coming summer heat in Los Angeles, Carmageddon, and the inevitable relative emergencies of fire and earthquakes, celebrities and traffic, cooking with penguins doesn't sound half bad. And you probably won't need to pack your PacoJet and Anti-Griddle, what with a whole ice shelf available. Assuming it hasn't melted by then.
